Videography

I’ve shot and edited hundreds of stories, and each one was unique. As a videographer the stories I recorded in my 15 years behind the camera as a professional broadcaster ranged in content from the tragic to the triumphant. I worked mostly as a videographer and in-studio camera operator for CHUM Television from 1999 to 2012. I spent seven of those years working as an “Everywhere” Citytv ENG (Electronic News Gathering) camera operator. Those years covering dignitaries, mega super stars, the forgotten, and everyone & everything in between definitely helped define my perspective on the world. On many occasions I’d finish my shift sitting in my truck crying. Many other days at work were the coolest most electrifying days anyone can hope to call work. Some times the tragedy, triumph and back to tragedy were all rolled into a days, or nights work. I definitely enjoyed hanging out with musicians, athletes, filmmakers, artists, and dignitaries. Too many to list but the likes of Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, or the pope are but a few names. Certainly sharing the stage with Burton Cummings or talking to Lebron James, or the PM for example make you understand how the perception and reality, of celebrity and reality aren’t always the same on the surface as they are in substance. But the tragic and somewhat insensitive side of the news and the “if it bleeds it leads” mentality certainly , and the spectrum of life experience covered by an all purpose videographer in a major media market gets one to get a grasp of ‘story’. If nothing else leaves a mark. After a while I felt like I was beginning to grow an emotional callus and the stories begin to feel like a circuit. I felt it was time to move on. I didn’t want to become insensitive to the stories I was telling. I chose this career because I think this incredible thing we call ‘story’ means something more than selling advertising or ratings.
